Many people ask what happens when they first come for counselling and the only real answer is that it depends on what they have come to me for, some of the things will be much the same for everyone though.
First of all, after making contact by phone or email, we will arrange and have an initial meeting which is really just some time for us both to get to know a little about each other and for you to ask any questions you might have about me and, if you are happy to do so, tell me a little about why you feel that you want counselling. If, after this meeting you decide that you want to work with me, we would then make arrangements for your first proper session in which I would first take some contact details about you (if we hadn’t already done so in the initial meeting) and then, at your pace, we would start to talk about what is bothering you.
Some people and some issues can be helped with short term CBT, some people prefer to take longer and some issues themselves take longer to work through. This is something we could talk about during the initial meeting or at an early stage in your therapy.
